Position Description

This management position requires substantial knowledge of international wildlife conservation policy and practice, including marine wildlife conservation; experience in the negotiation and implementation of international agreements; and the ability to direct, manage, and coordinate diverse staff working in the U.S. and internationally. The position serves as Defenders’ institutional lead on international conservation policy and programs. The incumbent works with the Senior Vice President for Conservation Programs, International Conservation program staff and other staff members to identify policy goals and set program priorities relating to the conservation of wildlife outside of the United States, and the conservation of marine wildlife in the U.S. and globally. The incumbent bears primary responsibility for the strategic development of Defenders’ international conservation work and provides programmatic direction and administrative oversight for Defenders’ International Conservation program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Supervise International Conservation staff and consultants
Work with Defenders staff to develop campaigns, programs, and legal strategies that achieve significant on the ground conservation value, and improve the state of international and domestic law relevant to wildlife trade, trade and environment, conservation of biological diversity, and marine conservation
Work with Defenders Mexico representative to develop campaigns and projects that improve wildlife laws, increase public awareness of and concern for threatened wildlife and ecosystems, and result in real and substantial conservation benefits for wildlife in Mexico, particularly species also found in the U.S.
Coordinate with relevant staff members in other divisions and offices to develop international and marine conservation policy priorities, ensure consistency between international and domestic policies, secure funding for Defenders international and marine conservation work, and increase public awareness of that work
Represent Defenders on international and marine conservation issues before federal agencies, international organizations, Congress, other conservation organizations, and other entities as necessary
Develop short- and long-range operating objectives, organizational structure, and staffing requirements
Develop and recommend departmental budget
Provide effective leadership to International Conservation staff.
Recommend, review and approve employment actions, including interviewing, hiring, promotions and raises, in conjunction with Human Resources. Partner with Human Resources in the handling of disciplinary issues.
Ensure communication of duties and responsibilities to direct reports and monitor performance. Provide regular coaching and counseling. Identify training needs. Prepare and deliver salary and performance reviews; review and approve performance and salary appraisals as necessary.
Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Advanced degree or equivalent in Wildlife Management or Ecology, Conservation Biology, Natural Resources or related discipline, or law degree, and demonstrated scientific, legal or policy credentials in international wildlife conservation and/or marine conservation.
Experience: 7+ years of progressively responsible, substantive experience in directing national/international advocacy campaigns, including 2+ years of relevant management/supervisory experience. Experience developing, implementing, and managing legislative and advocacy campaigns on a national/international level.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

HIRING--Legal Researchers, Summer semester 2011

The project seeks current J.D. and LL.M. students as well as recent graduates at AU WCL to work on research and drafting tasks implemented for a project focused on international and regional human rights systems and standards of the rights of older persons.

Legal researchers will contribute with their research reports and memoranda to a variety of activities, including documents on legal protection systems at national and UN levels, a scholarly publication on international and regional rights of older persons, as well as thematic papers for submission to international organizations. A part of the project activities will also focus on international development, especially human rights initiatives in technical assistance for civil society organizations, developed in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund. Additionally, legal researchers will have an opportunity to get involved in the project activities focused on the ongoing processes towards the strengthened human rights protection of older persons at the United Nations and Organization of American States, including the efforts towards a new convention.

Students and graduates with research experience in international law and advanced writing skills are encouraged to apply. Fluency in English is required and knowledge of other languages desirable. The work by students can also be completed for academic credit.

September 15: Religious Freedom Moot Court Registration

The Competition

The student chapter of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society at George Washington University worked with the law school in 2007 to inaugurate the National Religious Freedom Moot Court.

The competition takes place at The George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C. and consists of two preliminary rounds, a quarterfinal round, a semifinal round, and the championship round.

The preliminary rounds are to be held on the afternoon of Friday, February 4, 2011. The quarterfinal, semi-final and championship rounds will be held on Saturday afternoon, after which there will be a reception for the participants and judges.

While many moot court competitions involve questions of constitutional law or focus on various aspects of the First Amendment, the National Religious Freedom Moot Court is the first to our knowledge that is specifically dedicated to the issue of religious freedom.

Professors Ira C. Lupu and Robert W. Tuttle, Co-Directors of the Project on Law and Religious Institutions, oversee the drafting of the Moot Court problem. Teams will be assigned to brief one side of the competition problem, but must come prepared to argue both sides.

Who Can Compete

The competition is open to 24 two-member teams and is limited to 2L, 3L and 4L students from ABA-accredited law schools. In the event that more than 24 team register to compete, teams will be asked to submit resumes and any other information they feel may bear upon their commitment to the competition and their ability to perform (e.g., their team selection process). Teams will then be selected based on the quality of their members and the teams’ commitment to the competition.

Internship

Qualifications

Candidates should have a particular, demonstrated interest in telecommunications law, as well as other related and relevant legal fields such as media, Internet, intellectual property, administrative, and technology law. Experience and exposure to the telecommunication industry and law is helpful, but not necessary. Candidates also should possess a demonstrated, strong writing ability. Second year, third year, and LL.M students may apply. U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities

Intern duties will involve assisting attorneys with legal work relating to telecommunications and information policy development. Work may include legal research and writing on various legal issues effecting the communications industry, summarizing reports and filings at the Federal Communications Commission, reviewing current legislation, testimony, and other documents. Interns must commit to work approximately 18-20 hours per week throughout the Fall semester.

Position Description

This management position requires substantial knowledge of international wildlife conservation policy and practice, including marine wildlife conservation; experience in the negotiation and implementation of international agreements; and the ability to direct, manage, and coordinate diverse staff working in the U.S. and internationally. The position serves as Defenders’ institutional lead on international conservation policy and programs. The incumbent works with the Senior Vice President for Conservation Programs, International Conservation program staff and other staff members to identify policy goals and set program priorities relating to the conservation of wildlife outside of the United States, and the conservation of marine wildlife in the U.S. and globally. The incumbent bears primary responsibility for the strategic development of Defenders’ international conservation work and provides programmatic direction and administrative oversight for Defenders’ International Conservation program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Supervise International Conservation staff and consultants

Work with Defenders staff to develop campaigns, programs, and legal strategies that achieve significant on the ground conservation value, and improve the state of international and domestic law relevant to wildlife trade, trade and environment, conservation of biological diversity, and marine conservation

Work with Defenders Mexico representative to develop campaigns and projects that improve wildlife laws, increase public awareness of and concern for threatened wildlife and ecosystems, and result in real and substantial conservation benefits for wildlife in Mexico, particularly species also found in the U.S.

Coordinate with relevant staff members in other divisions and offices to develop international and marine conservation policy priorities, ensure consistency between international and domestic policies, secure funding for Defenders international and marine conservation work, and increase public awareness of that work

Represent Defenders on international and marine conservation issues before federal agencies, international organizations, Congress, other conservation organizations, and other entities as necessary

Develop short- and long-range operating objectives, organizational structure, and staffing requirements

Develop and recommend departmental budget

Provide effective leadership to International Conservation staff.

Recommend, review and approve employment actions, including interviewing, hiring, promotions and raises, in conjunction with Human Resources. Partner with Human Resources in the handling of disciplinary issues.

Ensure communication of duties and responsibilities to direct reports and monitor performance. Provide regular coaching and counseling. Identify training needs. Prepare and deliver salary and performance reviews; review and approve performance and salary appraisals as necessary.

Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Advanced degree or equivalent in Wildlife Management or Ecology, Conservation Biology, Natural Resources or related discipline, or law degree, and demonstrated scientific, legal or policy credentials in international wildlife conservation and/or marine conservation.
Experience: 7+ years of progressively responsible, substantive experience in directing national/international advocacy campaigns, including 2+ years of relevant management/supervisory experience. Experience developing, implementing, and managing legislative and advocacy campaigns on a national/international level.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

Responsibilities

Education and Experience

Bachelors degree or paralegal certification. At least two to four years of paralegal experience preferred.

Must possess good time management skills. Must be able to work independently at a high level of responsibility and meet strict deadlines.

Religious Freedom Writing Competition

Open to All JRCLS Student Members

Purpose

The purpose of the writing competition is to promote quality research and writing by the student members of the Society on the important topic of religious freedom. The competition is being sponsored by the DC Chapter of the Society and the International Center for Law and Religion Studies.

Awards

First Place: $1,500 cash award plus a $500 travel reimbursement to attend the award dinner in Washington DC in the fall at which award winners will be recognized
Second Place: $1,000 cash award
Third Place: $500 cash award
Honorable Mentions: Additional meritorious papers may be recognized.

One or more of the award winning papers will be published online and possibly in print.

Awards will be announced the first week of September.

Shawn Bentley Award Presented at JRCLS Luncheon

WASHINGTON – Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) today presented the prestigious Shawn Bentley Public Service Award to a current and a former student of Brigham Young University, Emily Hardman and Anne Sidwell.

In his remarks at the J. Reuben Clark Law Society luncheon, Hatch praised the two recipients of the award named after the late Utahn Shawn Bentley, a former Hatch staffer who died in 2005 at age 41 following a decade of stellar service on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“Emily [Hardman] has an impressive public service record,” the senator said, noting that the BYU law student and Hyrum, Utah, native has clerked for the Utah Supreme Court and Utah County Attorney’s office and will be working this summer on the Senate Judiciary Committee to assist with the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court nomination proceedings.

As for Modesto, Calif., native Ann Sidwell, a BYU alum who now studies law at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., Hatch said she “has dedicated her professional and academic life to human rights issues,” noting that she did research for the late U.S. Rep. Tom Lantos for a congressional briefing on “honor killings” and has since “interned with Ayuda, the Tahirih Justice Center, the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, and the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence. This summer she is working for the Human Rights Law Foundation.”

Concerning the award’s namesake, St. George, Utah, native Shawn Bentley, Hatch called him a “close friend and colleague” who was respected on both sides of the aisle because of his sterling character and considerable achievements.

“Shawn was a one-of-a-kind individual who lived a life of service …,” Hatch said.

The Shawn Bentley Public Service Award provides stipends to law student recipients who have demonstrated a commitment to public service and a willingness to explore legal public service opportunities in the Washington, D.C., area.

Hatch also joined U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito in presenting William Coleman Jr., an African-American who served as U.S. Secretary of Transportation during the Ford administration, with the Rex Lee Advocacy Award, which honors individuals who have exemplified excellent and principled advocacy throughout their careers.

Rex Lee served as U.S. Solicitor General in the Reagan administration and was the founding dean of BYU’s J. Reuben Clark Law School. He also served as president of BYU from 1989 through 1995. He died in March 1996 from cancer.
