Shawn Bentley Public Service Award

In December we announced that the DC chapter would begin accepting applications for the Shawn Bentley Public Service Stipend for students who are members of the JRCLS and who will work this summer (2015) in the DC area for a not-for-profit, or other public entity such as Congress or the Federal Government. International Religious Liberty Award Dinner and Reception

The J. Reuben Clark Law Society, Mid-Atlantic Chapter is pleased to announce the 5th Annual International Religious Liberty Award Dinner and Reception.  In conjunction with the J. Reuben Clark Law School's International Center for Law and Religious Studies, we congratulate this year's award recipient Congressman Frank Wolf from Virginia for his many years of support and work for religious liberty.  Throughout his career in Congress, Representative Wolf has championed efforts to alert our nation and the world to the plight of men, women, and children who are persecuted for living their religious convictions. For his tireless advocacy and record of legislative accomplishment, we proudly announce his selection for the 2014 International Religious Liberty Award.

REMINDER - Religious Liberty Writing Competition

Each year, the DC Chapter of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society, in conjunction with BYU's International Center for Law & Religion Studies, sponsors a religious liberty writing competition for law school and other graduate students. The top entry will be awarded a $2000 cash prize, plus $500 toward the cost of traveling to the Chapter's Annual Religious Liberty Award Dinner, which will take place in Washington DC on October 9, 2014. The second and third place winners will also be awarded cash prizes.

Opening at HHS Office of General Counsel

The Office of the General Counsel of the United States Department of Health

and Human Services (HHS) is seeking to fill several advisory-attorney

positions (GS 11/12/13/14) for its Ethics Division, which provides legal

services involving federal criminal conflict of interest statutes, standards

of ethical conduct regulations, financial disclosure requirements,

procurement integrity provisions, lobbying rules, and Hatch Act political

activity restrictions.  

Ethics Division attorneys work closely with the White House Counsel’s Office and the Office of Government Ethics (OGE) in clearing new Presidential appointees in the Senate confirmation process and also provide, in consultation with state bar authorities, guidance on legal ethics and professional responsibility issues.  Although the positions will have generalist ethics responsibilities, depending upon staffing needs, the positions may be focused on providing these services to a principal client agency, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the Administration for Children and Families (ACF).  

The duty station for the positions may be at the HHS headquarters in Washington, DC, or at an Ethics Division satellite office in Silver Spring, MD.

Candidates must have strong writing, oral, and analytical skills and be

adept at working with and advising clients.  Knowledge of federal or state

government ethics law, professional responsibility rules, political activity

restrictions, procurement integrity, or related subjects is preferred, but

recent law graduates and other attorneys with a strong interest in the

subject matter will be considered.  Knowledge of food and drug law, or the

legal framework for health and social services programs, will be considered

a plus.  

Salary currently ranges from $63,091 (Grade 11, Step 1) to

$138,136, (Grade 14, Step 10), depending upon experience.

Four Job Openings in GAO's Office of General Counsel

GAO's Office of General Counsel is seeking four experienced attorneys:

two attorneys to join its appropriations law practice and two attorneys to join its financial management and assurance practice. 

Appropriations law attorneys carry out the Comptroller General’s statutory responsibility to provide opinions to Members and Committees of Congress and decisions to agency officials and accountable officers on matters of appropriations law.  

Attorneys in OGC’s financial management and assurance practice provide legal advice and assistance to GAO’s Financial Management and Assurance audit team, Congress, and others on a wide variety of issues associated with executing and improving the federal government’s financial management.
